2019 HealthyWage Review (Includes My Results!)

Are you curious about HealthyWage and wonder if it will work for you? You’ve landed on the right page! I’m going to dive into all the pros and cons in this HealthWage review. I’m also going to provide my real-life case study! I’ve recently used HealthyWage and won $1,112, so I can verify HealthyWage is legit!

HealthyWage Review

Need a quick summary of what HealthyWage is? HealthyWage was founded in 2009 as a new way to lose weight – through financial motivation! The user decides how much they want to lose, how long it will take them to lose the weight, and how much money to “bet” that they’ll succeed. If they meet their goal in the time they allowed, they win the prize amount offered when they signed up!

HealthyWage offers several types of challenges (Team Challenge, Jackpot Challenge, Step Challenge, etc). The focus of this review is the individual weight loss challenge – the HealthyWager.

My HealthyWager Ratings (out of 100 possible points)

Review of HealthyWageEffectiveness: 100 – Financial motivation is very effective. Combined with clear goals and timelines make HealthyWager very effective.

Value For Money: 100 – If you win! In that case, you win a prize at no cost to you!

Support: 100 – I had a couple questions during my program and the HealthyWage support team was quick to respond. Additionally, there is a community of other users that offer support and additional motivation as well.

Risk: 98– Everyone’s risk tolerance varies, but it is worth noting that you will lose the money you wager if you don’t meet your goals. HealthyWage does not offer a refund (that would defeat the purpose of the wager). There are exceptions that can be made for medical issues or pregnancy. You can also extend your wager if you are not at your goal when it is time to weigh out.

PROS: financial motivation, clear goals for weight loss, accountability, support and weight loss tracking.

CONS: risk to lose money

I will go into the details of the program in my review below. Feel free to leave a comment if you have questions, or check out the HealthyWage website for even more information. If you are ready to start the HealthyWage program, click here to calculate your prize and get started!

Who Is HealthyWage For?

HealthyWage is for anyone looking for some extra motivation to lose weight. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that participants offered a financial incentive to lose weight were almost three times more likely to reach their goal weight than those with no money at stake!

The Power of Financial Incentives

Why do financial incentives like the HealthyWager work so well? The opportunity to win a prize enhances weight loss success. The financial incentive is a powerful tool that helps eliminate procrastination and helps you avoid giving up until you’ve reached your goals!

A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic divided participants into two groups – one group had a cash incentive and the other group did not. Both groups were evaluated for a year and given the same weight loss tools and tips.

The study concluded with 62% of the group earning a financial incentive losing weight, compared to 26% in the weight loss only group.

Features and Benefits – My Case Study!

I first heard of HealthyWage at the end of 2018. I had nearly given up on getting healthy, but decided to give it a try. Probably the only thing I obsess on more than my weight is my money, so I was quite confident that HealthWage would work for me! By sharing my personal experience with HealthyWage, I hope to provide:

  • A real life example of how the HealthyWage system works
  • Provide value to you, so you’ll have the information you need about how HealthyWage could work for you!

The Beginning

I started my HealthyWage program after the holiday season of 2018. I was the heaviest I’ve been since I had my son in 2007. I was tired of my lack of motivation to eat healthy and exercise.

When I first started researching HealthyWage, I had the same concerns many probably have. How can this work? How will they know I’ve lost the weight? Will I just lose my money? I wrote another blog post, How Does HealthyWage Work, to answer those questions (and the answers are in my case study here too). After researching many reviews (like this one) and educating myself on how the program works, I decided to go for it!

My Wager and Weight Verification

I played around with the HealthyWage prize calculator for a couple days. I just couldn’t decide how much to wager! I finally took the plunge and started the program by making my bet =

Once I entered my personal information, the HealthyWage calculator listed my prize amount as $1,112. The HealthyWage “algorithm” calculates the prize based off several factors including your BMI, wager amount, and so on. HealthyWage says the harder it will be to lose the weight, the higher the prize will be.

My 6 month time limit didn’t start until after I recorded my “verified” weigh in. This process may seem a little daunting, but it turned out to be easy using the HealthyWage smartphone app. Here are the steps to get your verified weigh-in:

Finally, I opted to pay my wager in installments versus all up-front. My thinking was that seeing the payment being withdrawn each month would be additional motivation.

My 6 Month HealthyWage Program

I have never been a successful “dieter”. I’ve tried various eating plans over the years with limited success. I usually lose a couple pounds then get frustrated when the weight stops coming off. I start off strong and strict, but can’t keep it up so I quit.

With the HealthyWage program, I really liked having a set time frame to lose the weight. Along the way, if I slipped a little, I just reminded my self of my goals (and the money on the line) and kept it up.

A thought that stuck with me through the whole program = “I’m in complete control of losing $600 versus winning my prize of $1,112. I’m not betting with horrible odds, I’m in control of the outcome!

At first, I didn’t share what I was doing with very many people. At the start, I still wasn’t completely confident I’d stick with it and certainly didn’t want anyone to know I’d wasted $600!

By the end, I was telling almost everyone I met! I was motivated to share what I realized – I was in complete control of my results and I was going to win!

My Weigh-Out Verification and Prize!HealthyWage Results

When I reached the last month of my six month program, I still had 5 pounds to lose. I was still confident that I could do it! I buckled down and lowered my daily calories, while increasing my daily movement.

HealthyWage provides a two-week window at the end of your program to weigh-out. At the end of the first week of my window, I weighed myself and was exactly at my goal weight! I recorded my weigh-out verification video and submitted it to HealthyWage. It was such a great feeling of accomplishment!

My weight was verified the next day, and I received an email that I had won my prize! My prize payment was paid to my PayPal account the next day!

  1. Thanks for this thorough review of the HealthyWage platform. This is a new product for me, but I am always on the lookout for reputable means to earn money online that I can pursue or recommend to others that count on me to find new methods for adding some extra income monthly for them, so it is timely.

This is an interesting and novel (for me) way to incentivize people to carry through with their weight-loss goals. I do know that adding real money to the mix changes results. In the late 80s, I was leading weight-loss groups as a part of a psychology graduate program, and I found this was true…

I ran test groups and charged a minimal fee for some and no fee at all for another group. The training, the course schedule, and as much as possible everything was identical for both groups EXCEPT for the paying for a membership versus a free membership.

The members that paid a small amount did better than the other group members did. There were other things we tested as the groups matured, but the idea that when money is involved people pay more attention and take action is the point. This program is just approaching it from a different angle.

Congratulations on “winning” your bet and the extra income that you made over the wager. I definitely will look into this for myself and for others who I still provide advice to on weight loss (I have been doing this for a number of years now) this sounds like a great program/platform!

    • Very interesting Dave – you should definitely check into the HealthyWage company, sounds like you already have a lot of experience with why it works! You are absolutely right – when money is involved, it made it much easier to pay attention to what I was doing! Check out these pages about why the program works and the Frequently Asked Questions. Best of luck to you!!

  2. Interesting site and concept. It was compelling and left me considering the program for myself. I particularly like that you included your own experience to give it an experienced-based, genuine feel. Thank you for this review of the HealthyWage program, I will look into it further.

    Best wishes moving forward.

  3. This is such a neat idea of how to lose weight.  Your review had me on every word and wondering at first if it was real.  As I continued reading through your review at the point where you told your story, you really got me.  What an interesting way to lose weight.  I find it so interesting that being paid makes people follow through and lose the weight.  It was so great to see your progress and that you achieved your goal. Great review and great post.

    • Thank you Coralie! I’m very happy to hear that you like my post logic by telling my story. That’s why I’m excited to share about HealthyWage – because it worked for me!

  4. Hi Adriann

Thank you for such a captivating article! Is there a minimum bet? I thought I heard everything so when I come across an article like yours that shows me I haven’t; I get intrigued.

May I ask, has the weight stayed off? Most diets don’t work for me because I am a serious sugar addict.

    Thanks again!

Cheers, and take care of yourself!

    • Your comment made me laugh! I was surprised to learn HealthWage had been around since 2009 – I’d never heard of such a thing either lol!

The total bet must be at least $100. So if you bet that you will lose 20 pounds in 6 months, your minimum bet will need to be $20/month for a total of $100. Also, fyi, there is a minimum weight loss goal of 10% of your current weight.

I have kept the weight off! I learned quite a bit about what works for me over the 6 month program. I’ve been able to maintain by reminding myself of what I accomplished!

Thank you for your kind words and best of luck to you!

  5. Hello AdriAnn,

I’m very happy for you with your combined financial and weight-loss success, congratulations! It’s an interesting concept that I had not heard about, and I can think of a few people I know who could be motivated by a concrete financial incentive towards losing weight.

You probably explained: how much do you actually risk of losing? thanks

    • Hi Phil – thanks for your comments!

The amount you wager is completely up to you. You pick how much you want to lose, how long it will take you, and how much you bet. Check out the calculator here to see your prize potential! The only way you lose money is if you don’t reach your weight loss goal in the timeframe you pick. Good luck on your weight loss!!
